Cihuateteo

$10.00

One of my Illustration books had some inaccuracies. This print is actually dedicated to the Aztec statues that portrays female warriors, the mociuaquetzque, the souls of women who died in childbirth.

“The Aztecs linked the act of birth to that of obtaining a captive in war, women who died in the attempt were valiant warriors slain in battle”

Aztec warriors fought over the remains of mociuaquetzque, and they used them as talismans to ensure bravery and success in battle.

It’s also believed that they haunted crossroads at night to steal children and cause seizures.
